Botswana's Healthcare Emergency

Botswana is facing a healthcare crisis. A massive shortage of medicine and medical equipment is the country's major concern. President Duma Boko stated funds are being amassed to counter lack of supplies and the military will act as distributor. The healthcare crisis is being blamed on the decline of the global diamond market and cuts from foreign aid. The failure to not utilize the diamond trade to healthcare demonstrates mismanagement. The crisis also reveals how foreign aid is not protection. The accumulation of debt creates dependency. The objective for Botswana should have been to independent in its healthcare services. A domestic ,medical supply chain must be developed. Central Medical Stores has been accused of corruption and links to the current medical supply chain issue. The CMS is a state procurement agency, which works with various intermediaries. The increase in drug prices and reduced medical service will harm low income Botswanans .Despite these challenges Botswana has dramatically reduced the rate of HIV. African nations must assist others on the continent. Rather than being reliant on foreign aid, programs should be created by the African Union. Botswana does have options. Some of these would required greater cooperation with South Africa, Malawi, and Tanzania. Botswana's healthcare crisis is a warning to all nations that do not have a stable domestic medical supply chain.

Vegetables Prices Are Increasing

The price of vegetables has increased. Overall, food prices have risen for a several years. The increase of vegetable prices impacts public health. Studies have noted that higher prices can undermine healthy eating. Fast food becomes an alternative when fruits and vegetables are too expensive. Chronic illnesses such as heat disease and type II diabetes can be prevent through changes to diet. The United States imposing tariffs on a variety of goods resulted in a spike in prices. Consumers and grocers are adjusting to economic uncertainty. Farmers are being impacted negatively, which will harm agribusiness. The tariffs on Mexico and Canada are the cause of the price increase related to vegetables. US farms do not have the capacity to immediately replace imported vegetables. The consumer will be paying more for domestically produced vegetables. Food companies were already engaged in price gouging and the new tariffs are an extension of that model. If prices continue to rise, food security will be threatened. People who are on the poverty line could face starvation. Food banks might not be equipped to manage the growing number of food insecure citizens. Supermarkets are going to struggle with consumers looking for other means to obtain food. A goal of the current administration is to improve health of the public. Tariffs and high prices prevent access to healthy food. Making vegetable prices cheaper ensures protection of public health.

President Hugo Chavez Embracing Africa and South America (2006)

President Hugo Chavez embraced Africa and its link to South America. Venezuela in the late 1990s began to enhance diplomatic relations with African nations. To an extent both Africa and Latin America share a common struggle. European colonization harmed the people of both continents. Spain was the major power that dominated Latin America. The wave of independence in the 1820s was undermined by the United States and the policy of the Monroe Doctrine. During this interview President Hugo Chavez voices his concerns for Mozambique. The scourge of AIDS and poverty in Africa was a concern for the Venezuelan president. Domestically, Hugo Chavez formed food programs to combat hunger in Venezuela. Chavez stated that "racism is characteristic of imperialism." Capitalism also acts as a binding network for these systems of domination. Hugo Chavez was not only calling for a socialist revolution, but a revolution of ethics. The world should not except that children die from lack of healthcare and destitute conditions. This cannot be the task of one leader Chavez expressed. The public must participate in a revolution. The notion of "taking back the flag of socialism" refers to stopping the cooption by social democrats and  political centrist liberals. These two factions are seeking reform, rather than fundamental change. The reason Hugo Chavez was demonized is that he wanted to challenge US domination in South America. The hatred was also from the US, which attempted to depose Hugo Chavez in 2002. Both Africa and South America cane benefit one another.

The Link Between Alcohol Consumption And Cancer

Alcohol has been linked to certain health concerns. While most  know about the damages it can do to the liver, a link to cancers has been reported. The Word Health Organization stated previously there is no safe amount of alcohol consumption. There has been an increase in breast and colon cancer. The new reports suggest that high consumption of alcohol is linked to six different types of cancer. This includes liver, stomach, and esophageal cancer. The disturbing trend  is people under 50 are having higher cancer rates. Drinking  is a part of culinary culture of certain societies. The youth could be harming their health by staring a pattern of overconsumption. The new information also proves the error of previously accepted positions. Medical professionals used to assert that moderate drinking was fine. The claim even held that some alcohol could protect the heart and circulatory system. Some thought alcohol would be a way to prevent cardiovascular disease. New information demonstrates that is false. Alcohol is now reaching the status  cigarettes and cigars. No amount of smoking is safe or healthy. The data continues to show the same for alcohol consumption. This means the effects of alcoholism are more severe than once thought. Oncologists might have to examine alcohol more extensively as a means treating various cancers. The information might not stop people's drinking habits, but it provides a warning of the risk. Nutrition facts and food labeling must be updated to reflect the new health information.

The Safety Concerns About Ozempic

Ozempic is a medication used to treat type 2 diabetes. Now it is being used for weight loss. The medication got FDA approval in 2017. Having FDA approval does not make a drug safe. Pharmaceutical corporations are able to get various products on the market that could be harmful. Deregulation and a Food and Drug Administration that flows the dictates of business allowed this. The side effects of Ozempic include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, constipation, and diarrhea. Ozempic does not permanently eliminate weight problems. The drug has to be taken regularly to maintain a certain weight. Which means a person using it could regain the weight they lost. Exercise and a change in diet would be more effective. The effects of long term use is unknown. Ozempic could possibly cause kidney, gall bladder, and pancreas related issues. Most drugs on the market have side effects that could result in other health concerns. The dieting and weight loss industry wants a medication on the market. A weight loss drug would be profitable. The problem is corporations do not care about consumer safety. Side effects of drugs are classified as either mild or severe. A certain amount of severe side effects has to be present for a drug to be removed from the market. Ozempic has not yet met those conditions. The FDA must reconsider the use of Ozempic as a weight loss drug.

The Emergence of Mpox

The World Health Organization has declared mpox a health emergency. This is not a pandemic. The cases seem to be mostly in African countries. Mpox does cause concern considering the world just came out of the COVID-19 pandemic. Public health policy was not improved and the globe cannot handle another crisis of that magnitude. The difference with mpox is that a vaccine exists. When COVID-19 appeared there was not a vaccine for it. Mpox is classified as orthopoxvirus. The means of transmission is by animals making it zoonosis based. Monkeys and rodents are thought to be the carriers. Mpox can be spread through bodily fluids. Mpox has various symptoms. Rashes, fever, chills, swollen lymph nodes, headaches, muscle aches, and respiratory difficulties are common symptoms. The outbreak was first detected in 2022. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is now fighting an epidemic. Concern could be premature. Mpox is a rare virus and would not reach the same level of the 2020 pandemic. Mpox is not a s lethal. Mpox can be fatal if  medical treatment is not given. Infections from mpox can spread throughout the body. Africa has managed an Ebola virus outbreak in 2014 and a Marburg virus epidemic in 2005. Mpox can be contained with proper public health measures.

The AstraZeneca COVID-19 Vaccine Withdrawn From Use

The AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine has been withdrawn from use. The reason is that its vaccine can cause the side effect of blood clots. Some reports reveal that it can also cause low blood platelet counts. Blood platelets are also known as thrombocytes. These cell fragments do repairs to the body when injured to stop bleeding. After three years of saying side effects were minimal the evidence shows otherwise. Defective vaccines were put out into the market. Vaccinations should not cause other health issues. The lack of business regulation is to blame for the negligence of  pharmaceutical corporations. Class action lawsuits have been filed in the UK against AstraZeneca. The fact that people can get vaccine injured brings into question the policy of vaccine mandates. If employees get sick from a vaccine they are required to take, then that company is liable. The AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine was distributed to 150 countries. The exact number of people who were vaccine injured is not known. There is no indication that it cause long term permanent health damage. Although getting thrombosis or thrombocytopenia should not be deemed insignificant. The World Health Organization also confirmed in 2021 that there could be adverse side effects from the AstraZeneca vaccine. This was not a condemnation, rather they claimed it was rare and not a serious concern. It becomes apparent that excuses were being made for egregious errors. Mainly it could be to protect Oxford University, which was a collaborator in developing the vaccine. Along with the Serum Institute, they made it possible for to exist. The side effects cannot be dismissed if the company is now ending production of the vaccine. The AstraZeneca highlights the need for more regulation of pharmaceutical corporations.

The Global Rise In Excess Deaths

The COVID-19 pandemic caused a spike in excess deaths. Even when the vaccines were made available the morality rate did not go back to pre-pandemic levels. Excess morality is a public health concern, but is not discussed. Excess morality was high in 2023. This was a time when COVID-19 vaccines were available and the World Health Organization declared the emergency over. The people who are dying from the virus are those with comorbidities and the elderly. The excess death  pattern has been seen in Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Greece, UK, Israel,  the US, the UK, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Switzerland,   and Iceland. The  excess death are not a product of the COVID-19 virus in 2023. Some speculate that the portion of those deaths occurred due to unanticipated side effects of particular vaccines. Blood clots and myocarditis occurred in some people who were vaccinated. There is not enough data to support certain brands of the COVID-19 vaccines were responsible.  Another  probable explanation is that global healthcare systems are not equipped for a large world population. Fewer hospitals and a large population increases the likelihood of more excess deaths. Countries with aging populations should make sure that healthcare and hospitals are able to handle demographic changes. Governments refuse to do any investigation into the 2023 spike of excess deaths. The main reason is that it would show that most governments failed to produce effective public health policy. If excess deaths  do not decrease in 2024, then it is a concern governments cannot ignore.

The Use of Paxlovid For COVID-19

The anti-viral drug Paxlovid is available for use. There are tight controls of the medication. The intent of its creation was to help people with severe COVID-19. Some patients may have extreme reactions to particular vaccines and a pill could be a solution. The debate comes with what was stated previously. The vaccines produced were safe and effective, so Paxlovid is unnecessary. Booster shots exist for fighting new variants. Pfizer has been producing mRNA vaccines to fight COVID-19. If the mRNA technology is truly effective, Paxlovid  would not be needed. The only time for such a drug would be in emergency situations. Paxlovid is two drugs which contains nimatreviler and ritonavir. The complication comes with individuals on multiple medications. All of them are going to interact in the body. A patient would have to tell their doctor of  all the medications they take. They would then have to determine a way to avoid  harmful effects from the interactions between medications. The recommendation for Paxlovid is that anyone 12 and up can be given the drug. Those who are 50 or with comorbidities can be given Paxlovid. What Pfizer appears to be doing is putting a product out on the market for the sake of profit. No reports of adverse effects have appeared. Considering Pfizer did not test their vaccines for transmission, distrust from the public remains. A person who was vaccinated could still spread the virus. The CDC reported that COVID-19 deaths spiked in December of 2023. This was not due to the lack of medications or treatment. The healthcare system is on the verge of collapse. Medicine price remains too high for a population with stagnant wages. Pharmaceutical corporations need more regulation to prevent unethical business practices. The long term effects of Paxlovid are not known. The fact the drug got FDA approval demonstrates that it is pharmaceutical  corporations dictating public health policy.

The Development of Proteins From The mRNA COVID-19 Vaccines

The mRNA vaccines have unintended side effects. What has been discovered by virologists is that the mRNA vaccines are creating proteins in cells. The report makes some concerned about the safety of using mRNA vaccines. So far, there is no indication that mRNA vaccines can produce abnormal proteins. The goal of certain pharmaceutical corporations is to apply mRNA technology beyond vaccines. Corporations should bot dictate public health policy. The reason the pandemic became such a crisis is that officials were making decisions in relation to business interests. The effects of the mRNA technology might not fully be known. The hope is that the vaccinated will not have future health conditions. The ribosomes of the body act as the builder of proteins. RNA provides instructions to ribosomes for protein production. The ribosome examine the mRNA. The codons have to provide information on the amino acid in the protein. What mRNA technology does is use an artificial version of RNA. The artificial RNA carries new directions for a specific protein in the cell. An immune response is created by means of the spike protein. The obstacle is that the artificial mRNA can be attacked by the cell. The concern about frameshifted proteins emerges. The consensus is that the frameshifted proteins are no threat. One problem is that virologists did not consider that it could be if too many vaccinations are given. Getting a booster shot for every single COVID-19  variant is not practical. If a person was previously vaccinated and had COVID-19 they would have hybrid immunity. Using mRNA technology for other treatments or therapies would not be advised until a clear understanding of  the long term effects are known.

Healthcare Workers Go On Strike

Healthcare workers have gone on strike to demand higher pay and better working conditions. This next wave of strikes demonstrates that neoliberal capitalism will exploit the labor force no matter what sector. Hospitals have ignored the demands of nurses and medical professionals for too long. Across the country they have to deal with long hours, low staffing, and limited pay increases. The strikes that have been occurring in entertainment, the service sector, and railroads show an economy that is not functional. Combined with inflation and the rising cost of living this is putting strain on the American workforce. Organized labor could under go a renaissance. The challenge is not allowing labor unions to act as a barrier between the government and labor force. At times labor unions have been used  as a means to hinder aspirations for change and settle for meager reforms. It may take revolutionary action to improve working conditions in the United States. The 75,000 employees that were able to force change in Kaiser Permanente may provide a guide  to worker empowerment. The Kaiser Permanente strike was the largest healthcare worker strike in US history. What the obtained was a $25 an hour increase in pay over the next decade. Although it is a victory, it could be short lived if inflation continues and energy related sanctions remain in place. Housing, utilities,  and food consume most of the population's income. Healthcare workers have more power than they realize. Without them, COVID-19 would have been more devastating. The pandemic and the recent strikes demonstrates the healthcare system in the US had declined. The fight is not over as healthcare nurses in other states are still on strike.

The Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant Water Released Into The Pacific Ocean

Japan has released the water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean. The IAEA has claimed that the radiation levels are safe and that releasing the war will cause no harm. It would be erroneous to think that is so. The release of radioactive water not only is a concern for public health, but the the aquatic ecosystem. Marine wildlife will be negatively impacted by this development. More radioactive water is going to be released in the coming decades. Seafood production and the fishing industry are going to experience the economic effects. China has already expressed that it will be cautious about purchase of seafood from Japan. The United Nations approved of Japan's plan of disposal of the radioactive water. There is little evidence that discharge of the water is safe. Tokyo Electric Power which operates Fukushima stated that not abnormalities were observed. Environmentalists are growing frustrated with a number of international institutions that favor the release of the water. The first discharge of water is set to reach a total of 7,800 cubic metres. That is not so large that any damage done cannot be reversible. The releases must be stopped for the sake of public health and environmental protection. The biggest concern is the tritium contamination. As long as contaminated water is being released ban on Japanese imports could become permanent. South Korea  Hong Kong, China, and Macau are banning Japanese aquatic imports. Those in the fishing industry are more anxious about how the discharge of radioactive water could impact their business. The Fukushima disaster has never really ended in this regard. Natural disasters are never going away. Which is why buildings and infrastructure should take into account particular engineering needs.

The Global Heatwave And Concerns About Public Health

The world is experiencing a rise in temperature. More potent heatwaves are going to be common as years pass by. The environmental concerns related to flooding and damage to ecosystems tends to be the focus. What is forgotten is the impact on public health. People are going to be at risk for heat exhaustion and poor air quality. It becomes lethal for the elderly and those with respiratory diseases. The people who are in good health could see it decline with exposure to high amounts of particulate matter. Temperatures are going to continue to increase according to data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service. Norway, Sweden, and Japan have seen a drastic change in temperature. There is no single factor that explains the global  heatwave. Many countries have experienced heatwaves. The difference in 2023 is that they are occurring simultaneously. Other countries are seeing a reverse. Span, Portugal, Northern Russia, Southern Chile and Argentina are seeing colder temperatures. It remains a mystery if the heatwaves will follow a consistent pattern or fluctuate at random. Numerous countries must make adjustments for global heatwaves. Cooling centers and access to clean drinking water should be a priority. Seeing as it effects most nations across Africa, Asia, Latin America, Europe, and North America cooperation is required. Environmental protection should be taken seriously, rather than a cause of just a few organizations. Examining the risks and dangers  in the context of public health would motivate  leaders to act. Global heatwaves eventually could become bigger threats if no policy is developed to combat them.

The UN Reports Growing Food Insecurity

The United Nations according to their data shows growing food insecurity. The annual report on nutrition has linked the Covid-19 pandemic, climate change, and warfare to the spike. Food insecurity disproportionately effects African and Asian nations. The areas of food insecurity tend to be in war zones and unstable countries. However, the Russia-Ukraine War has not resulted in the starvation of the European population. The reason is that the conflict has not spread to other parts of Europe. What the annual report does not mention is that food prices were going up prior to the pandemic, wars, and dramatic increase in global temperature. Poverty also contributes to food insecurity. If food prices increase with out income getting enough food is not possible. The estimate the UN provided shows a crisis that does not get enough attention. A total 783 million  faced hunger in 2022. The rise of hunger hotspots are low in the West. Certain UN officials asserted  that global hunger could be ended by 2030. The goal is unrealistic considering the environmental  challenges and threat of war zones. While millions face hunger, others are generating food waste. Restaurants and supermarkets dispose of large amounts of unconsumed food. If the United Nations was serious about fighting global hunger, they would try to build an international system of food banks. What prevents this is getting to refugees and having a safe location. Africa has become the worst effected from the global food crisis. That is due to the fact that Sudan, Somalia, Nigeria, Mali Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, and the DRC have experienced conflict. With war comes food insecurity among the civilian population. Solutions are going to require the efforts of farmers, nations, and a number supranational organizations. Otherwise the next report could have larger numbers of people suffering from starvation.

The Negative Impacts of COVID-19 Lockdowns

The World Health Organization declared that COVID-19 is  no longer a public health emergency. It appears that the pandemic gradually is coming to an end. That does not put a stop to the concerns and controversy surrounding public health policy. Considerable debate continues about the origins of the virus. The origin was either zoonotic or the result of gain of function research. Bats and pangolins were cited as the origin of COVID-19. However, the Wuhan Lab that was doing viral research might have been the source. The lab leak theory gains more credibility when viral research has been done for a number of years internationally. A definite answer or conclusion cannot be made without an investigation. Speculation is not conspiracy theory. Notions that COVID-19 was a Chinese bioweapon or part of a depopulation program would be deemed conspiracy theories. The accusation of disinformation and conspiracy theory has been designed to deflect major failures during the crisis. Public health policy was handled poorly and caused more damage. Lockdowns were neither effective or helpful in stopping the virus. The negative impacts will be seen for years to come. Education, the economy, and  personal health suffered due to the lockdowns imposed. Social distancing, vaccination, viral testing, use of masks,  and quarantines  were far more effective methods than lockdowns. Few questioned the policy or acknowledged the devastation it caused. Anti-lockdown protests occurred, because the policy was causing psychological and economic harm to citizens. The more restrictions that came, the greater the possibility of basic human rights to violated. The COVID-19 pandemic ushered in an era of biosecurity policing state apparatus. When the next  pandemic emerges methods might become more draconian. Lockdowns should not be part of public health policy.

Education was effected. Children were experiencing learning loss. Locking down schools had no scientific basis given the data. Children were at the lowest risk of death from COVID-19. Risk factors increased based on age and health condition. A person with comorbidities would ne more likely to die from the virus. Healthy children would be safe. The lockdown of schools put struggling students at a disadvantage. Those with learning disabilities or students having difficulty with a particular subject need in person instruction. Students who had  high academic performance also experienced learning loss. Reading and mathematics must be taught in a certain way. Online instruction is not enough to fully master these subjects. The  digital divide demonstrated the disparities among students. Every child does not have internet access. Students of lower socioeconomic status were put at a disadvantage. While primary and secondary school students were negatively impacted, university students were as well. COVID-19  made most classes online. Considering that students are paying high tuition, this becomes more egregious. Students come to class to get a full lecture and instruction. The fact in person learning  was not part of students 2020 semester deprived them of the educational experience. Learning loss is not a temporary mishap. Children who do not learn the essential skills needed will struggle to get employment in the future. As technology and the process of automation advances higher education will be needed for the majority of the workforce. Disruptions such lockdowns jeopardized children's education.

The economic devastation from lockdowns can still be felt. Small businesses struggled, unemployment increased, and the world's population lost financial security. Governments did not supply an adequate amount of funds for people to sustain themselves under lockdown. While major corporations were protected, small businesses failed. Working from home was an option for some. Certain jobs cannot operate this way. Construction, retail, and public transportation need employees to present. Some financial aid did come, but did account for cost of living. Rent, utilities,  mortgages,  food, and fuel still had to be paid. Lockdowns made it  impossible to conduct basic commerce. The result was a rapid growth electronic commerce. Seeing as shops, stores, and shopping centers were not open due to lockdown restrictions an uneven shift occurred. Microsoft , Amazon , and streaming services did not have competition. The stores that did remain open began doing price gouging. Those who were employed as essential workers were praised, but did not get the proper amount of hazard pay. Nurses and grocery store workers were made into heroic figures, yet not treated as such. The economy was made worse by lockdowns and exacerbated class division. The poor suffered more in comparison to the upper class elite. Those who who were middle class were getting closer to falling into poverty. Unless a person could get remote work, finding a job was more difficult during the pandemic. Staying home would not be possible unless a person had  enough income to cover living expenses. The years between 2021 to 2022 did not see a recovery. People did not return to jobs, because the pay was to low . When the lockdowns ended all the businesses did not return. The use of masks and social distancing would have been a more practical solution . Instead lockdowns and erroneous supply-side economic policies were implemented.

The well being of the public was harmed by lockdowns. Reports of mental health concerns and a rise of domestic violence became common. Loneliness and depression rates were directly connected to the lockdowns. These mental health conditions existed before lockdowns, it just caused more people to suffer from them. The anxiety was also induced by a media and government that promoted fear rather than rational solutions. Panic and concerns about getting sick made some withdraw from social contact. People could not see friends or family. To some this a critical support system. Those with a stable relationships in their social circles discovered for the first time how it feels to be isolated. The lockdowns had an disparity between men and women in terms of well being. Domestic violence became a bigger threat to women under lockdowns. Women who experienced this abuse had limited options during the pandemic. Women's shelters might not have been available. The freedom of movement was restricted and women attempting to escape violence was made harder. Little consideration was given to the horrid condition in which victims of violence live. Mental health was not only effected, but a physical condition can be too. People require some exposure to sunlight. Being sedentary during lockdown can alter circulatory system health. The feeling of being trapped caused a sense of hopelessness. Some were even speculating that the lockdown was going to be a "new normal ."  People who were financially secure  felt lockdowns were an extended vacation. Others were stressed, losing their housing, and in state of constant anguish. The decline in mental health predates the pandemic. The public health crisis made it worse.

Lockdowns were presented as the only solution. When the pandemic started vaccines were not available. Those who challenged the position were either ignored or accused of spreading disinformation. When it became apparent that a zero COVID-19 policy was not possible, more people objected to lockdowns. Anti-lockdown protests emerged in Germany, China, the US, Spain, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Hungary, and Austria. Canada, Israel, and Lebanon also saw anti-lockdown protests. The demonstrations were not a far-right plot, but a reaction to strict stay at home orders. Citizens were almost forced to protest due to governments not giving sufficient funds to survive. When it came to China's zero COVID-19  policy it meant food insecurity for the people of Shanghai. Those who refused to get vaccinated in Austria were subjected to lockdown. The irrational fear and demonization of the unvaccinated was just another case of panic influencing behavior. The vaccinated can still spread the virus, so the vaccine mandates did not matter. Lockdowns did not contribute to stopping the pandemic. What got the crisis under control was reaching a point of hybrid immunity and vaccines.COVID-19 will not disappear or  be eliminated by lockdowns. Quarantines and viral testing are better approaches. Quarantines take individuals who were sick or exposed and separates them. The term should not be confused with lockdown, which stops daily operations or activities. Efficient viral testing would have prevented much of the disturbances that followed. Social distancing in public accommodations made more sense than shutting down various public places. Instead certain nations chose a lockdown policy when studies have show they were not effective. John Hopkins University concluded in 2022 that lockdowns did not reduce COVID-19 mortality. The spread of the disease was only minimally reduced. Lockdowns were evidence of failed public health policy. The unfortunate fact is that governments and the biomedical establishment will not learn from their mistakes. The world remains unequipped to fight the next pandemic.

Europe Has The Highest Amount of Alcohol Consumption

The World Health Organization earlier this year reported that there is no safe amount of alcohol consumption. This could have serious implications related to public health. Europe consumes the highest amount of alcohol in the world. The data from the WHO states that the average European consumes about 9.5 litres. The demographic analysis started at ages 15 and up. The overconsumption of alcohol can have negative health outcomes. Recently, the WHO has called attention to the link with certain cancers. The throat, mouth, esophagus, and breasts could be vulnerable to cancer due to overconsumption of alcohol. The European health report noted that total alcohol consumption decreased between 2000 and 2019. The data also revealed that men tend to drink more than women. The largest sex related gap can be seen in Spain and Portugal. The countries with the highest amount of consumption included the Czech Republic, Germany, Latvia, Moldova, Lithuania, Ireland, Spain, Bulgaria, Luxembourg, and Romania( all were measured in per capita ). The lowest age demographic for consumption was between the ages 15 to 24. The report noticed as people got older the more alcohol consumption increased. No reason was provided about this connection with age and amount of  drinking. The reason some might drink heavily is due to stress or episodes of depression. Seeing as this is being done in advanced age, it could strain  the healthcare system. The potential public health crisis will be more gradual. The only means of stopping this is updating labelling. The full lists of the potential risks should be made public. The WHO estimates 1,000,000 perished from alcohol related  health issues. The data was only from the countries of the Europe. Union. Providing knowledge to the public can be a  a preemptive measure to prevent a major  health crisis.  The WHO declaration was too slow in coming to the conclusion about amount of  safe alcohol consumption. Updating warning labels and encouraging people to reduce their drinking are useful solutions.

Dr. Anthony Fauci Discusses Masks (2020)

When the Covid-19 pandemic began Dr. Fauci asserted masks were not necessary. At the time there was not a vaccine available and masks were one option for protection. However , studies conducted in 2023 concluded masks offered a low level of protection. That does not mean they did not work. Social distancing and vaccination offered much more effective protection. When the interview was conducted in March of 2020  vaccines were not available. Dr. Anthony Fauci telling people not to wear a mask was negligent. The shortage of personal protective equipment was the government's biggest failure. The reason Fauci spread this misinformation is because healthcare workers were effected by the mask shortage. Instead ineffective public health policies were enacted. Lockdowns and zero Covid-19 policies did not stop the spread. Mask mandates did little to defeat the pandemic. If masks were not as effective as social distancing, quarantines, or basic hand washing mask mandates were not necessary. Anthony Fauci's misinformation  caused more confusion and harm during the Covid-19 pandemic.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan's Reforms

President Samia Suluhu Hassan announced this month that political assemblies will be allowed. Opposition parties have claimed they have been subject of harassment and false imprisonment in Tanzania.  The Political Parties Act is still in effect. The law is seen as a way of reducing the ability of opposition parties to function in the country. The reforms are a surprise considering the election will be held in 2025. President Hassan has stated that she intends to  seek reelection. Under the law political parties are to hold assemblies in their constituencies only. Holding rallies in other areas is restricted. The administration's approach to the Covid-19 pandemic differed from the previous presidency. President Hassan encouraged vaccination, rather than imposing strict lockdowns. One concern relates to economics. The emphasis on the private sector to attract foreign investment has not worked for other African nations. Public programs are normally cut, making the countries more vulnerable to external exploitation. President Hassan has been in office since 2021. It is too early to say what direction Tanzania will go. The first female president of Tanzania should at least enact policies that improve women's lives and well being. If the reforms benefit the majority of citizens, an electoral victory can be achieved.

Jacinda Adern Set To Resign

Prime Minister Jacinda Adern has announced she will resign. New Zealand will be getting a new leader in February . What this hints to is the fall out from the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions. Lockdowns and vaccine mandates caused division in New Zealand. The lockdowns in New Zealand did negatively impact the economy. New Zealand also closed its borders. The damage done from restrictions can still be felt. Prime Minister Jacinda Adern even suggested postponing elections due to the pandemic. The criticism of her policies has nothing to do with her sex. Some supporters claim that the anger felt is based on misogynistic  sentiments. Frustration over public health policy and crisis management are legitimate concerns.  Very little was done to address the racism after the Christchurch shooting. Effort to reduce anti-Muslim sentiment was not shown in any policy. The promises regarding healthcare and affordable housing were not met. A combination of these failed policies would mean she would fact defeat in an election. The Labour Party faces a challenge from the National Party. Jacinda Adern's  leadership might not be remembered fondly by the New Zealanders. The self induced economic strain has made citizens question the governments competence.

Ebola Detected In Uganda

Uganda has detected the Ebola virus in its borders. The information brings fears of the outbreak  in Liberia around 2014. The outbreak then spread throughout West Africa.  The Democratic Republic of  the Congo also experienced an outbreak in 2018. The recent outbreak is believed to be a new strain. That makes it difficult to develop a vaccine to prevent further infections. The COVID-19 pandemic has not ended. Even though there are enough vaccines to fight the disease, the healthcare systems might not be ready to handle another major crisis. The World Health Organization is tracking developments. Some virologists are debating whether or not this is another type of virus. The strains detected in the DRC and Sudan are classified as Ebola virus. It has not been confirmed that this is a new type of virus different from Ebola. Outbreaks of Ebola have ended without vaccines. Quarantines, surveillance, strict hygiene practices, and well equipped healthcare teams have contained outbreaks. Uganda did have a 2012 outbreak  of Ebola virus, but this did not become a pandemic. Isolating and providing quality medical treatment to the infected is the best way to prevent further spread. These techniques will have to be used if vaccines cannot be produced fast enough. The new virus might still be classified as part of the arterivirus group.
