A New Species Of Spider Discovered In Angola

 

New species of arachnids are being discovered. The most recent addition known to scientists comes from Angola. The new  spider's habitat is located on the Lisima Plateau. The area is remote and could contain more unknown organism to zoology. The new arachnid has been called the crowned crab spider. An official scientific name has not be given to the organism.  The spider glows blue under ultraviolet light, but the reason is unknown. The adaptation could either be some type of defense mechanism or means of navigating dark areas. During this wildlife survey, more insects were found as well. Some of these insects could be the sustenance arachnids consume. The challenge of detecting new animals relates to geography and environment. Reaching certain areas can be difficult for wildlife expeditions. More interest has been generated in protecting the Lisima Plateau. The ecological diversity of Angola means that it can sustain various wildlife. Documenting  the organisms would be beneficial to biological knowledge. The Wilderness Project was involved in this expedition not just for taxonomy of new animals, but for the preservation of their habitats. The crown crab spider most likely is unique among other arachnids.   

The Discovery of A New Species of Spinosaurus

 

The Spinosaurus mirabilis is the newest dinosaur to be added to the growing fossil record. More is going to uncovered with advances in paleontology. The Spinosaurus mirabilis differs from other species with what appears to be a horn shaped bone  on its cranium. There is not enough information to state the anatomical purpose. Scientists have known about Spinosaurus' since 1915. The year 2026 was a significant development in the study of these extinct organisms. Questions remain about their behavior and what type of predators they were. Either they swam to acquire pay or stalked their food on shore. New species give insight into the evolution of dinosaurs. The bone on the head was either for fighting or a sexual signal. The bone is to small to be effective for fights. If this was a sexual symbol then this indicates sexual dimorphism in the species. Either it was a male or female trait. This is speculative seeing as it is not possible to do natural observation of extinct animals. The bones of Spinosaurus mirabilis were excavated in Niger. More fossils of dinosaurs could be in the Sahara Desert. What scientists know about dinosaurs is constantly changing. When more fossils are discovered a number of texts are going to be revised to include new information. Spinosaurus mirabilis was a formidable predator, which means it could have been attacking larger animals for food.   

Tesla's Shift To Robotics And AI

 

Tesla is making a transformation of its business model. The company is moving away from the production of electric vehicles to AI and robotics. The tech industry has seen a major concentration in the application of AI. The motivation could relate to Tesla's fall in revenue. The fall in sales has a direct link to the political activities of Elon Musk. The CEO of Tesla worked for the Trump administration in the Department of Government Efficiency. The purchase of Twitter and then its rebrand to X.com generated controversy. Seeing as Musk damaged the public image of the company, sales of Tesla vehicles declined. The manufacturing plants are being converted into Optimus robot production centers. The new AI venture has been revealed to be called xAI. The motivation to do the shift is to replace workers with robots. The Optimus is not advanced enough to do certain tasks. The technology at this stage is more so an amusing product of entertainment. Over the next few decades, the Optimus robots could be able to perform more functions. Jobs in manufacturing, tech, and the service sector could vanish due to the Optimus robot. Tesla is using X.com as a testing ground for AI. The rise of AI seems similar to the .com bubble of the late 1990s to early 2000s. Limited regulation and unpredictable technology could have dire consequences. Tesla faces competition from other companies, that focus on AI solely. Tesla transformation from car production to robotics and AI will take a number of years.  

Remembering Jane Goodall (1934-2025)

 

Jane Goodall was a pioneer in the fields of primatology. Here decades long career was spent studying chimpanzees. The study of primates allows for a greater understanding of anthropology. Chimpanzees have an intricate system of social behavior. Jane Goodall was able to direct observation of these primates in Gombe National Park. Jane Goodall first when to the park to do research in 1960. What she observed were animals that were capable of various emotions, but were also intelligent. Goodall thought that chimpanzees generally were peaceful. Although she did note troops would engage in violence. Chimpanzees also are capable of tool making. Chimpanzees Jane Goodall observed were also omnivores. They will eat a combination of insects and fruit. During the late 20th century, Goodall became more concerned about the environment and the protection of animal life. She became active in conservation and warned about the dangers of climate change. Chimpanzees are under threat from deforestation, poaching, and human inflicted damage to the environment. Conservation is needed to not only protect wildlife, but to ensure Earth's survival. Jane Goodall's research and activism provides a blueprint for zoological study and preserving species who are at risk for extinction.   

Tortoises Have Long Term Emotions

 

The University of Lincoln conducted a study on red-footed tortoises. Based on what was observed, tortoises can have long term emotions similar to mammals and birds. This is the latest step in understanding reptile behavior. The study used only 15 red-footed tortoises. These animals can be found in South America. Red-footed tortoises can also be found in Trinidad and Barbados.  Little information exists about the emotions  of other species of tortoises. What was used for the experiment was a cognitive bias test. When placed in enriched environments, the animals showed signs of positive emotion. When placed in unfamiliar environments, the red-footed tortoises appeared to develop anxiety. Beyond being data for zoologists, the findings can have applications elsewhere. Zoos can use it to make better environments for the tortoises they have. Seeing as tortoises are popular pets, owners can make better choices for creating habitats. Keeping certain species of tortoises in captivity can be a challenge. Diseases and habitats that do not meet their needs are concerns. This also opens more questions about the biology of tortoises. If they are capable of emotion, their cognition is probably more advanced than previously thought. Then a consideration must be made for the evolutionary circumstances for long term emotions. Conservation efforts are underway for vulnerable populations of tortoise species. Learning more about proper approaches to well being for the animals can prevent extinction. 

President Obama Visits Elon Musk At SpaceX (2010)

 

Before Elon Musk became administrator of  the Department of Government Efficiency, he was seen as favorable to the Democratic establishment. SpaceX is a private company that wants to expand space exploration. President Barack Obama visited SpaceX in 2010 and met with Elon Musk. Musk discusses the Falcon 9 rocket and the Dragon Spacecraft. It appears the intention of Musk was to get more government contracts. He could have contemplated that SpaceX would replace or surpass NASA as the major organization for space exploration. When the presidential  election of 2024  saw the return of Trump, Musk found a means of promoting techofeudalism. Elon Musk represented the worst of the billionaire excess. This was ignored because Tesla makes electric vehicles. The production of electric cars promoted the image of an environmentalist and clean energy Democratic Party . The irony is that Tesla cars would be vandalized in response to Elon Musk's actions in the federal government. The myth of the humanitarian billionaire gradually is crumbling. Even though Musk is leaving government he maintains ownership X.com, Tesla, and SpaceX. Elon Musk was building up influence government since the 2010s.    

The Emergence of Mpox

 

The World Health Organization has declared mpox a health emergency. This is not a pandemic. The cases seem to be mostly in African countries. Mpox does cause concern considering the world just came out of the COVID-19 pandemic. Public health policy was not improved and the globe cannot handle another crisis of that magnitude. The difference with mpox is that a vaccine exists. When COVID-19 appeared there was not a vaccine for it. Mpox is classified as orthopoxvirus. The means of transmission is by animals making it zoonosis based. Monkeys and rodents are thought to be the carriers. Mpox can be spread through bodily fluids. Mpox has various symptoms. Rashes, fever, chills, swollen lymph nodes, headaches, muscle aches, and respiratory difficulties are common symptoms. The outbreak was first detected in 2022. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is now fighting an epidemic. Concern could be premature. Mpox is a rare virus and would not reach the same level of the 2020 pandemic. Mpox is not a s lethal. Mpox can be fatal if  medical treatment is not given. Infections from mpox can spread throughout the body. Africa has managed an Ebola virus outbreak in 2014 and a Marburg virus epidemic in 2005. Mpox can be contained with proper public health measures. 

India's Heatwave

 

India is experiencing an extreme heatwave. This follows a pattern that has been observed by climate scientists. The heatwave become even more precarious with water shortages. The heatwave can be explained by climate change and India's growing urbanization. The human environment interaction in cities contributes to an increase in temperatures. India needs a level of industry and urbanization to become a developed nation. The need to regulate industries and to have fossil fuel free alternatives must be put into motion. heatwaves pose a serious threat to public health and a danger to workers. Pakistan is also having challenges with the 2024 heatwave. If the climate models are correct, India's temperature will continue to increase. Efforts must be made to reduce emissions. The desire to develop the country should not come at the expense of the environment or the Indian citizen. At some point, no amount of environmental policy or regulation can reverse rapid climate change. The population is not only effected, but also India's wildlife. Certain animals might not be able to survive under such temperatures. That will result in changes in the ecosystem, which will directly impact farmers. With high temperatures comes the risk of forest fires. Jammu and Kashmir are experiencing forest fires. Heatwaves and water shortages could in the future determine how India votes. Indians are being harmed by the heatwaves, with deaths being reported in the last five days.  

The Development of The Tungsten Encased Nuclear Reactor

 

A new fusion record has been set by the tungsten tokamak WEST. The development of tungsten encased nuclear fusion reactors could become a more efficient method of energy generation. The device located at the Princeton Physics Plasma Laboratory was able to hold hot fusion  plasma at 50 million degrees Celsius for six minutes. In order to generate power for a grid, the plasma has to be hot and dense. If the research continues, there might be fusion reactors that will be commercially available. The efforts of the Coordination on International on Long Duration Operation have produced favorable results.  Prior to this experiments did utilized graphite titles. The device that used that material was the Tore Supra. Tungsten is favorable because it retains less fuel. However, the limitation is that it cane make the plasma cool. Keeping a certain amount of heat is needed for energy generation. Technological barriers and physics challenges do prevent fusion reactors from being used for power. Tokamak WEST will require more adjustments to be able to be connected to a large power grid. The tungsten walls are going to be the most important development in nuclear technology. As fusion reactors advance further, considerations for tungsten mining should be made. China, the United Kingdom, Rwanda , Vietnam, and Russia are going to have to increase tungsten mining. These countries are the major producers of the element. Production would have to increase dramatically if fusion reactors are going into regular use. At the moment the machinery requires more advancement. The news demonstrates that fusion reactors are not theoretical. The devices have reached a phase of applied science.  

The Nuclear Energy Summit

 

The Nuclear Energy Summit has opened in Brussels. The summit is the first of its kind seeking to expand nuclear power. Europe was for a time focusing on the expansion of renewable energy. This comes as a reversal of policies that were proposed a decade ago. Demonstrations against the summit expressed concerns from environmentalists. Nuclear power does produce waste, which must be stored in other areas. Unless there is a serious discussion about fusion reactors, the summit will not be effective. Nuclear fusion reactors could generate power and reduce waste. Environmentalists note that more nuclear reactors will not protect the climate. The expansion of nuclear power plants is about energy independence for Europe. The Russia-Ukraine War made EU countries realize how vital this is. Another aspect is that nuclear energy business sector wants to remain relevant. Solar, hydropower,  and wind power technology could get much cheaper, which means it would be more difficult for nuclear to compete. The move away from nuclear power was sparked by the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011.According to IAEA nuclear energy accounts for less than 10 % of global energy generation. France remains the leader in nuclear energy. An estimated 66.66 % accounts for its energy generation. A total of 30 countries are attending the summit in Belgium. The proposals are designed to phase out fossil fuels, which using nuclear energy as a substitute. The objective is to triple nuclear energy. This is dependent on the amount of uranium available. Countries such as Kazakhstan, Canada, and Namibia are going to have more importance to the nuclear energy industry. Those countries have uranium mines, but it is not clear if the can keep up with a surge in demand. The goal is to reduce emissions by 2050 , but certain factors could prevent this summit target. The Nuclear Energy Summit has been controversial with activists concern about negative effects to public health and the environment.    

Richard Dawkins Answers A Question About Atheism At Randolph-Macon Women's College (2006)

 

Richard Dawkins presented a lecture on his book  The God Delusion  at Randolph-Macon Women's College. Dawkins is a major figure in evolutionary biology. His studies in zoology made him conclude that God cannot exist. The lecture afterwards had students come and ask questions. One student asked if Richard Dawkins could be wrong. Dawkins responds that your religious beliefs depend on the culture in which you were born. If a person was born in Europe, they most likely would be Christian. If a person was born in West Asia they would probably be Muslim. A combination of history, sociology, and culture explain these convictions. The theory of evolution is working off a fossil record. Religion operates on a person's faith. Religion does not require a system of verification. The scientific method has to be used to discover facts. God as theist state exists, but do not provide evidence. Science has to provide data, observations, and experiments that have to be replicated. Faith is not evidence of the existence of a God. When debating this topic, it favors evolutionary biology. God does not explain why there are so many life forms or why certain organisms go extinct. A God cannot be detected. Genetics, paleontology, and biological research demonstrate evolution explains life on Earth.   

The Development of Proteins From The mRNA COVID-19 Vaccines

 

The mRNA vaccines have unintended side effects. What has been discovered by virologists is that the mRNA vaccines are creating proteins in cells. The report makes some concerned about the safety of using mRNA vaccines. So far, there is no indication that mRNA vaccines can produce abnormal proteins. The goal of certain pharmaceutical corporations is to apply mRNA technology beyond vaccines. Corporations should bot dictate public health policy. The reason the pandemic became such a crisis is that officials were making decisions in relation to business interests. The effects of the mRNA technology might not fully be known. The hope is that the vaccinated will not have future health conditions. The ribosomes of the body act as the builder of proteins. RNA provides instructions to ribosomes for protein production. The ribosome examine the mRNA. The codons have to provide information on the amino acid in the protein. What mRNA technology does is use an artificial version of RNA. The artificial RNA carries new directions for a specific protein in the cell. An immune response is created by means of the spike protein. The obstacle is that the artificial mRNA can be attacked by the cell. The concern about frameshifted proteins emerges. The consensus is that the frameshifted proteins are no threat. One problem is that virologists did not consider that it could be if too many vaccinations are given. Getting a booster shot for every single COVID-19  variant is not practical. If a person was previously vaccinated and had COVID-19 they would have hybrid immunity. Using mRNA technology for other treatments or therapies would not be advised until a clear understanding of  the long term effects are known. 

J. Robert Oppenheimer Discusses The Use Of Nuclear Weapons (1965)

 

J. Robert Oppenheimer did have regrets about the creation of nuclear weapons. At the time, it was thought it was the fastest way to end World War II. The ethics of killing Japanese civilians in Hiroshima and Nagasaki continues to be debated amongst historians. Large investments were made in building the atomic bomb, so at some point was going to be used. It was an estimated 2 billion dollars.  Using such a weapon was also a means of threatening the Soviet Union. Oppenheimer does not hide the fact that all scientists had different opinions about the project and nuclear weapons. Some hoped that the war would be over before the atomic bomb was completed. The hope it was not going to used in a war. J. Robert Oppenheimer understood the world would not be the same and that the use of  atomic energy posed risks. His efforts at regulation of atomic energy was met with resistance. He was a victim of the anti-communist witch hunts in the early 1950s. As a result he lost his security clearance and was no longer allowed to work in US government. Nine countries have nuclear weapons in the world today. The technology will spread and it makes J. Robert Oppenheimer's arguments about atomic energy regulation more relevant.   

Climate Change Is Effecting Developing Nations

 

Climate change is going to impact public health, the economy, and well being of nations. According to the UN's World Meteorological Organization, weather disasters have surged between 1970 to 2021. The majority of deaths have occurred in developing countries. The data showed that it accounted for 90%. The data was extrapolated from a study of 11, 778 weather disasters. Floods, cyclones, hurricanes, and heatwaves are going to become more powerful. While the focus was on developing counties, least developed countries are going to be at risk. Early warning systems and disaster management is not going to stop the increase in climate change related  incidents. More laws are needed for environmental protection and reducing global emissions. Corporations that are part of the fuel industry have to account for the damages. The burning of coal and the drilling of oil  need to replaced with alternative energy sources. Funding research into new technologies, such a carbon capture plants should be the task of governments and the United Nations. The biggest obstacle is that fossil fuel companies have influence over governments in the EU and North America. These countries continue to exploit and extract the natural resources of the Global South. The West will not be completely shielded from the dramatic shift in climate. Too many extreme climate incidents could negative impact their economies. The UN early warning system will not be effective unless practical solutions are made to address the growing climate crisis. Without a large international climate and environmentalist movement, pressure will not be present for change on a global scale. The evidence is being more visible with higher temperatures and an increase in sea levels.  

Kenya Will Launch The Taifa-1 Satellite

 

Kenya has taken interest in space exploration and its commercial possibilities. Kenya's first satellite is called the Taifa-1. Kenya is not the only country launching satellites. A total of 13 African countries have produced up to 48 satellites. The space program has highlighted the ability of Kenyan engineers. This observation satellite will provide valuable information related agriculture and monitoring food security. Kenya has recently struggled with drought and is looking for new methods to combat its effects. Observation satellites can show where drought and desertification is causing the most damage. Using that data can help allocate resources to various regions. Taifa-1 is not just technology for solving problems. It represents Africa's technological rise. The year 2018 was another milestone related to Kenya's space program. Kenya launched a nanosatellite from the International Space Station. Other African countries have been active in satellite production. Ethiopia, South Africa, Sudan, and Angola have space programs. Over the next few decades Africa could be seeing more observation satellites launched.  

Ebola Detected In Uganda

 

Uganda has detected the Ebola virus in its borders. The information brings fears of the outbreak  in Liberia around 2014. The outbreak then spread throughout West Africa.  The Democratic Republic of  the Congo also experienced an outbreak in 2018. The recent outbreak is believed to be a new strain. That makes it difficult to develop a vaccine to prevent further infections. The COVID-19 pandemic has not ended. Even though there are enough vaccines to fight the disease, the healthcare systems might not be ready to handle another major crisis. The World Health Organization is tracking developments. Some virologists are debating whether or not this is another type of virus. The strains detected in the DRC and Sudan are classified as Ebola virus. It has not been confirmed that this is a new type of virus different from Ebola. Outbreaks of Ebola have ended without vaccines. Quarantines, surveillance, strict hygiene practices, and well equipped healthcare teams have contained outbreaks. Uganda did have a 2012 outbreak  of Ebola virus, but this did not become a pandemic. Isolating and providing quality medical treatment to the infected is the best way to prevent further spread. These techniques will have to be used if vaccines cannot be produced fast enough. The new virus might still be classified as part of the arterivirus group. 

The First Hoverbike Shown To The Public

 

The world's first hoverbike has been invented. The technology was the product of Aerwins. The capabilities are somewhat limited. The total speed the hoverbike can reach is 62 miles per hour. This can only remain in flight for 40 minutes. The hoverbike will not be replacing the motorcycle at the moment . Then the price makes it out of range for most of the public. The hoverbike by Aerwins costs up to $ 777,000. The name of this hoverbike is called Xturismo. The goal is to make a smaller model and an electric version. The schedule for release is set for 2025. Japan has simultaneously been building hoverbikes. Aerwins plans to produce 200 more Xturismo hoverbikes. While their application can go beyond just mere transportation, there are some concerns. Law enforcement could easily abuse this technology. The hoverbike could be designed for military use. That should not be the intent of the technology. Using them for a racing sport or search and rescue operations would be preferable. A hoverbike might be a better option than a car. The challenge would be related to regulating traffic. Certain companies want to invest in an air taxi service. Airlines have interest in the development of an air taxi service. The hoverbike is in an earl development stage. It takes time to develop technology and perfect engineering. 

The Appearance of MonkeyPox Virus

 

The World Health Organization has declared MPV a public health concern. This might be an overreaction considering COVID-19 has the ability to be more lethal. The pandemic has not ended and energy should be concentrated on that outbreak. MPV's fatality risk is estimated to about 3 % to 6%. The disease does not have the same potential for a massive public health crisis. The virus is classified as an orthopoxvirus genus and part of the poxviridae family. At the moment there are over 16, 500 cases reported from a total of 74 countries. The virus has a similarity to smallpox, but the degree of severity is lower. The  number of cases is lower than that of COVID-19 so declaring a public health emergency of international concern could be premature. The reasoning is to have proper precaution. However, this can only induce international panic among the world population . The virus can spread through body fluids, contaminated  items, or be respiratory based. The symptoms of the disease include lesions, headaches, fever,  swelling of the lymph nodes, muscle pain, sore throat, and coughing. Seeing as it is infectious enclosed spaces make it easier  to spread. It has been reported a significant number of cases have been reported in gay men who are very sexually active. The fear is that this will be similar to the failed public health response to AIDS. The origin of these outbreaks remains a mystery. The accidental release from gain of function research has been suggested. Other theories is that animals carrying multiple viruses came into contact too much contact with humans. The World Health Organization still has not confirmed origins of the MPV outbreak. 

The World Health Organization Reports The Majority of The World Population Is Breathing Contaminated Air

 

According to a World Health Organization report  the majority of the world is breathing low quality air. Fossil fuel use has not only effected environments, but public health. Every continent has populations that are breathing polluted air. The data was accumulated from cities, towns, and villages across the globe. What it found was air quality was worse in certain locations. The eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia, and Africa had larger amounts of low air quality. Breathing polluted air has been linked to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. The study measured the amount of particulate matter and levels of nitrogen dioxide. Particulate matter refers to substances in the air which could be a mixture of solids. This generated from power plants, transportation,  agriculture, industry, and the burning of waste. Nitrogen dioxide can be generate from exhaust from a large number of automobiles. Particulate matter  is classified as two types. These classifications are known as PM2.5 and PM10. PM2.5 has the ability to enter the body and result in decline in health. A growing concern is the increase of asthma across the world. Children and the elderly could be effected the worst. When compared to  the 2018 database it appear air pollution has gotten worse. Solutions do exist to this environmental crisis. Production of electric cars, alternative energy, and proper regulation of industry can reduce world air pollution levels. The obstacle is getting all nations to agree on platform by the World Health Organization.  

Jocelyn Bell Burnell Awarded The Copley Medal

 

Jocelyn Bell Burnell won the Copley Medal. This is the oldest scientific award still in existence. She was instrumental in the discovery of pulsars. Pulsars are a type of star that rotates and emits high amounts of electromagnetic radiation. The radiation comes out of the magnetic poles. They are spherical in shape and have mass that exceeds that of the sun. Pulsars were only discovered in 1967 and changed what scientists knew about outer space. Space is a strange environment of black holes, planets, stars, comets, asteroids, and dark matter. Pulsars are just another strange object that astronomers and astrophysicists examine. Classified as a neutron star its rapid spinning from a far away distance makes it look like a blinking  of lights. Burnell did not get a Nobel Prize in 1974, but instead it went to her PhD supervisor. She was a graduate student that contributed to a major discovery and would not get recognition until decades later. Jocelyn Bell Burnell continues to study various binary starts and has assisted in the construction of radio telescopes. Later She served as president of  the Institute of Physics. Being the first to identify pulsars was an important  advancement in the field of astrophysics.
