The UK Housing Crisis

The United Kingdom is experiencing a shortage of affordable housing and increase in homelessness. The UK housing crisis is not a new development. The Central Bank of England recognized that challenges related to housing resulted in long term harm to the UK's economy. Landlords and real estate are exploiting the population by increasing prices. Building more homes would make the existing ones less valuable. That means the prices of homes will increase to rate more than they are worth. The UK is experiencing population growth and limited housing. This only creates more discord in the wider society. This will project in the form of election results. As long as political figures do not provide for the population, winning seats in parliament is going to be difficult. The refusal to apply adaptive reuse to older buildings creates wasted opportunities. Studies have even made the correlation between poor housing and reduction of health. Low quality housing has been linked to respiratory diseases and mental health decline. This was based on data from the UK Housing Review. The middle class and poor are most effected by the housing crisis. The upper class elite are not only gaining more wealth, but more property. Economic inequality and laws that enable unfair business practices are to blame. Owning a home is out of reach and renters are at the mercy of landlords. The private rented sector must be subject to more regulation to stop abuses or possible criminal offenses.

The Increase of Home Ownership Among Single Women

There is a widening gap in home ownership. Single women are gradually surpassing men in home ownership. The United States is seeing this shift, yet it should not be interpreted as progress. Housing is a concern in the US, with homelessness increasing in a number of cities. Men make up the majority of the homeless based on current data. The increase in home ownership among women also relates to inheritance and a growing number of widows. Husbands do not get much of a benefit from being a widower. The spike has been explained by older women getting houses. Seniors are more likely to own a home compared to the younger generation. The general public interprets this as a triumph of women's rights and independence. Rather it ignores how gaps can fuel gender antagonism and the negative consequences of neoliberal capitalism. As housing gets more scarce, competition for living space will increase. Single men and women are going to fight one another for homes. The baby boomer generation continues to hold onto multiple properties. Simultaneously, private equity firms are buying apartments which increases rents. The economic consequences are damaging, yet the social changes can be as well. These single women are going to be a group that collaborates with a system of economic inequality. Single men who are struggling are going to seem them as an enemy. An oppressive economic system is dividing men and women in ways never thought imaginable. The single woman home owner development will continue assuming there is not a housing crash or global financial meltdown. Changes in gender roles and new attitudes are going to cause difficulties. Women used to seek men with resources and property. Now that can be obtained by their own efforts, there is no reason women should demand men be providers. The goal should be to have both sexes own homes, not a gender gap.

Earthquake Strike Myanmar and Thailand

Myanmar and Thailand have experienced devasting earthquakes. Natural disasters produce a series of long term problems for public health, infrastructure, and housing. Homelessness will increase as a result of destroyed buildings. The military regime in Myanmar has no plans to address the concern of people who lost their homes. Reports estimate that the deaths in Myanmar are 1,600. The number could increase as more debris is cleared. Thailand's capital was damaged from the earthquake. Roads and bridges were also destroyed from the natural disaster. Rebuilding infrastructure is going to require major investments. Myanmar and Thailand might struggle to generate the funds for reconstruction. The military regime also is hostile to external contact. Hospitals are overwhelmed with the injured. The earthquake reveals the need to engineer earthquake resistant buildings. The earthquake was so powerful that skyscrapers in Bangkok were mot spared. The reason Myanmar is so susceptible to earthquakes relates to its location. It is located on a convergence area of the Earth's four major tectonic plates. Myanmar rests on the Sagaing fault. This explains why Mandalay was hit with immense force. Buildings that are older are going to be more vulnerable to collapse. Thailand's older buildings do not meet the safety construction standard. Vigorous earthquake protection for buildings must be required by law. Although regulations do exist, it appears most were not followed in Thailand.

Controversies Surrounding The 2024 Paris Olympics

The Paris 2024 Olympics have begun with controversy. France cleared the streets of migrants and homeless. It was July 25, when migrants and homeless were forced onto buses. Police took them to temporary lodging areas. The concern is that the migrants and homeless are going to be trapped in these areas. The migrants that were forcibly removed were mostly of African descent. Migrants are from Senegal, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, and Guinea. These were former colonies of the French Empire.  The racist overtones cannot be ignored. If these were European migrants or refugees they would be treated better. Some also are questioning why France is hosting the Olympics. The economic challenges and demonstrations make the country tense. Hosting the Olympics might not generate economic prosperity. A boost in tourism can help, but it is temporary. Construction of sports venues and stadiums contributes to pollution. The Olympics are following a consistent pattern. The term for this is known as social cleansing. Removing those who are oppressed and struggling is a way to make a country look better. France cannot hide its poor and its anti-immigrant sentiment. The athletes are competing in high temperatures. All have to sign waivers prior to competing. The IOC should be responsible for the safety of the athletes. All these controversies are mounting and it will continue with future Olympic games. Some are debating the relevance of the Olympic games and why they should continue. The Olympics still generate profits and a  large fan following. The IOC must change policies and nations must ensure that hosting the games does not result in displacement of the vulnerable.

Earthquakes In Afghanistan

Afghanistan has suffered a major earthquakes. This has been the most destructive natural disaster in the country's recent history. An estimated 2,000 people are reported dead. The damage done to villages will result in an increase in homelessness. Herat province was struck the worst. The only countries providing humanitarian aid include Turkey, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan , China, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia. Other countries from the EU or NATO members have done nothing. Only rumors of financial aid have been expressed from the West.  The reason is because of the Taliban regime. Denying the people help, because other countries disapprove of the government is itself a human rights violation. The Afghan people have never been able to select their government. The act of collective punishment becomes very apparent when seeing who refuses to give humanitarian assistance. Pakistan is in a complicated relationship with Afghanistan. The question of undocumented refugees becomes connected with aid. If Pakistan did not want to take more refugees, then it should have an interest in helping with its neighbors development. The first earthquake was a 6.3 magnitude classification. Recovery will take time and this only sets the country back after years of war. The logistics of getting aid to Afghanistan provide a unique challenge. The mountainous  terrain makes travelling more difficult. Food, clothing, shelter, and clean drinking water need to be provided from those escaping the western section of the country.
