The Impact of Hurricane Melissa

Hurricane Melissa struck the Caribbean. Jamacia, Cuba, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and the Bahamas were effected by the storm. Hurricane Melissa is one of the most powerful storms to date. Hurricanes also bring about death. So far, only 28 deaths have been recorded. This might not include those who are missing and later found to be dead. Total deaths are subject to change when more information is uncovered.  A low casualty rate demonstrates the effectiveness of emergency preparation. The aftermath of the storm causes complications. Jamacia has reported an increase in homelessness and property damage. Most of Jamacia does not have power. Without electricity it is difficult for a country to function. Cuba's concern relates to possible landslides. Recovery is difficult under sanctions imposed on Cuba. Haiti's situation was made worse by the hurricane. Violence by armed groups and UN occupation damaged Haiti's internal stability. Haiti now has to deal with flooding of various areas. Food security poses another concern for Caribbean nations. Temporary shelters are not adequate if the number of homeless increase. Hurricane Melissa is not finished. Bermuda could be at risk based Hurricane Melissa's pathway.
