Tony Blair Responds to the Chilcot Report

Former Prime Minister Tony Blair has been forced to respond to his role in the Iraq War. The Chilcot Report reveals that the case for war was based on fallacies. The evidence was the Downing Street Memo in which both the US and UK would coordinate to overthrow the Saddam Hussein regime. This is significant, because it means there could be a legal case to have Tony Blair tried for war crimes and aggressive war. Although this outcome is unlikely, the prospect seems to worry Blair enough to do a PR offensive. Across the Atlantic, there was little commentary from former US President George W. Bush. These two leaders were adamant in pursuing an aggressive policy toward Iraq and the Middle East as a whole. Blair does not show remorse, but instead rationalized aggressive war. The former Prime Minister stated the world is much better off without a Baathist government in Iraq. This falsehood can be refuted with simple facts. Iraq's regional power had been weakened by the 1991 Gulf War and sanctions were damaging its economy. No-fly zones were rigidly enforced undermining Iraq's sovereignty. It was hardly capable of inflicting harm on the US or UK. Only time will tell if Tony Blair will be charge for serious offenses.
